My quest to find something really interesting to do in Iowa City this weekend was rewarded when I stumbled over this News Release from the University of Iowa.
On Sunday February 12, 2012 The U of I Center for New Music will join the wordwide celebration in honor of John Cage turning 100 this year. This was one interesting individual who was a pioneer of a new way of looking at music. He pushed the envelope and approached music and dance in a way that had never been done before to become one of the most influential composers of the 20th Century.
Here’s the Schedule for a series of free, public events celebrating the life and legacy of John Cage on Sunday February 12 in Iowa City:
- A performance of “Sonatas and interludes” by pianist Patricia von Blumröder at 12:30 pm in Room 2780 of the University Capitol Centre.
- A panel discussion at 1:45 pm in Room 2780.
- “Lecture on Nothing” narrated by University of Michigan musicologist Mark Clague, at 3 pm in Room 2780.
- A staging of Cage’s 1967 happening called “Musicircus,” filling the entire second floor of the Old Capitol Centre and featuring more than 400 musicians, dancers and readers performing simultaneously at 4 pm.
- A concert by the CNM Ensemble featuring Cage compositions from the 1930s to the 1970s at 7:30 pm in the Riverside Recital Hall.
